My husband’s dad has always had a soft spot for me. Even when I first started dating his son back in high school, he always welcomed me at family gatherings and would lend a hand with my car, being a mechanic himself.
He’s a quiet and serious man, so I was taken aback when, as my husband and I were leaving their house after a family dinner, he handed me a pack of gum. It was already missing a few pieces, but I accepted it.
