Vance had opposed launching the war before President Donald Trump made the final decision, but publicly defended the administration afterward. Privately, he continued gathering information about Iran’s ability to withstand attacks, potential disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, casualties and the availability of critical weapons. Commanders reportedly expressed concern about declining inventories of Patriot interceptors and other precision munitions, raising questions about how supporting the Middle East could affect U.S. deterrence against China, Russia and North Korea.
The account says Trump had initially expected Iran’s government to collapse quickly, while Pentagon planners had prepared for a relatively short campaign.
