Mother of conjoined twins given just 24 hours to live reveals why she refused to separate them

When conjoined twins Callie and Carter Torres were born in 2017, doctors feared they might not survive their first 24 hours. Joined at the chest and abdomen and sharing parts of their body, the girls were considered too medically complex to separate. Just three days after their birth, doctors told their mother, Chelsea, not to pursue separation.

The twins survived and continued to defy expectations. When they were around three years old, their parents faced the question again, but ultimately decided that Callie and Carter should be allowed to make the decision themselves when they were old enough to understand the risks and consequences of surgery.

Now nine years old, the sisters have learned to move through life together, despite sharing legs and having to coordinate every step. Their mother said learning to walk was extremely difficult at first, but they eventually mastered it. They enjoy drawing, crafts, and playing Roblox, while settling disagreements by talking things through—or sometimes with a game of rock, paper, scissors.

Chelsea admits she is nervous about the future, especially as the girls approach their teenage years and eventually face questions about relationships and dating. For now, however, Callie and Carter continue to live life side by side, having already overcome challenges doctors once feared they might never survive.
