Samantha Stites endured a terrifying 13-hour ordeal after Christopher Thomas, a former college acquaintance who had pursued her for years, lured her into an underground bunker and held her captive. She had rejected his romantic advances years earlier and even obtained a protection order after his persistent harassment.
When the six-year protection order expired, Thomas reportedly resumed his unwanted behavior. During the captivity, Stites relied on her social-work training, carefully observing his actions and keeping him talking. She realized he was afraid of going to prison and used that fear to persuade him to let her go.
Stites made promises and appeared cooperative as she tried to survive, including complying with a sexual demand under coercion. After approximately 13 hours, she secured her release. Once safe, she went to a hospital to preserve evidence and cooperated with police, helping investigators locate the bunker. Thomas was arrested within 48 hours.
Thomas later pleaded guilty to kidnapping, torture and aggravated stalking and received a prison sentence of 40 to 60 years. Stites eventually shared her experience in a Hulu documentary, drawing attention to the dangers of stalking and the difficult decisions survivors may face when fighting to escape. Her story is a chilling reminder of what can happen when someone repeatedly refuses to respect another person’s boundaries.
