The “Smiling Bird” That Wasn’t a Bird at All

There’s something uniquely calming about being outdoors. Long walks along quiet lanes, leisurely Sunday strolls through fields, or hikes beneath towering trees all have a way of resetting the mind. For many, nature offers more than exercise — it’s a grounding ritual, a chance to reconnect and recharge. And sometimes, it offers surprises you’d never expect. That’s what happened to Australian nature lover and amateur photographer Kym Beechey, whose walks often include a camera in hand. She enjoys capturing glimpses of local wildlife, though she knows it’s rarely easy — most creatures are shy and don’t linger long enough for a perfect shot. But on one particular outing, she spotted something perched low on a branch that stopped her in her tracks.A Curious Little “Bird”From a distance, Kym was sure she was looking at a baby tawny frogmouth, a bird native to Australia often mistaken for an owl. Its small, round shape and what looked like a faint smile on its face made the sight even more magical.Careful not to disturb it, she zoomed in with her phone and quickly snapped a few photos. Convinced she’d just captured a rare wildlife moment, she leaned in to admire her find. That’s when the truth came into focus. Not a Bird at AllThe fluffy “chick” wasn’t a bird — it wasn’t even alive. What Kym had photographed was a banksia pod, the woody seed case of the native banksia tree. These pods are known for their quirky, almost whimsical shapes, and from certain angles, they can resemble animal faces — even birds with beaks and eyes. No wonder Kym was fooled! Once she realized her mistake, she couldn’t help but laugh. The “baby bird” she thought might spread its wings one day wasn’t even capable of blinking.
