I saw them before they saw me.<\/p>\n
Bryant Park, middle of the afternoon, office crowd all around, and my son sitting on a bench like a man who\u2019d been emptied out. Three suitcases at his feet. My grandson kicking at a pile of yellow leaves, little sneakers lighting up every time he stomped.<\/p>\n
I pulled up to the curb and crossed the sidewalk so fast a guy with a coffee cursed under his breath. I didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n
\u201cNathan,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
He looked up. Eyes red, shirt wrinkled, wedding ring still on.<\/p>\n
Behind him, Mason saw me first and bolted over.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrandpa!\u201d he yelled, grabbing my hand with both of his. \u201cCan you fix this?\u201d<\/p>\n
That one sentence hit harder than any boardroom fight I\u2019ve ever been in.<\/p>\n
I looked at my son. \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you at the office?\u201d<\/p>\n
His jaw clenched. \u201cGot fired this morning,\u201d he said, staring past me. \u201cCharles said our family doesn\u2019t belong with people like them. He told security to walk me out.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYour own father-in-law,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
Nathan nodded, eyes glassy. \u201cWhile I was in that meeting, Victoria changed the locks. Put my stuff outside. Said her dad was right about me.\u201d<\/p>\n
For a second, I just stood there, listening to the city hum around us. Cars honking. Somebody laughing into their phone. My grandson\u2019s fingers wrapped tight around mine.<\/p>\n
Then something inside me went very, very still.<\/p>\n
\u201cGet in the car,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t have anywhere to go,\u201d Nathan whispered.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou do now,\u201d I told him.<\/p>\n
Mason squeezed my hand. \u201cMom says you\u2019re the strongest man in New York,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can fix it, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
I dropped to one knee so I was eye level with that kid. \u201cYeah, buddy,\u201d I said. \u201cI can fix it.\u201d<\/p>\n
We loaded the suitcases. My head of security slid in next to Nathan without a word. We pulled away from the park, skyscrapers flashing past the windows while my grandson fell asleep against his dad\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n
After a few minutes, I spoke.<\/p>\n
\u201cI built Sullivan Maritime with one delivery truck and a beat-up sedan,\u201d I said. \u201cThirty years later, eight hundred million a year in contracts. You know that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan nodded, staring out at Midtown.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat you don\u2019t know,\u201d I said, \u201cis three years ago I quietly bought Hudson Freight. Used holding companies. Different names. I put your father-in-law in that big corner office he loves so much.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan blinked. \u201cYou own Hudson?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI own Hudson,\u201d I said. \u201cHave the whole time.\u201d<\/p>\n
He sat up straighter. \u201cThen why did you let him treat me like that? Every dinner. Every cheap shot.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause you came into my office and told me you didn\u2019t want to be \u2018the boss\u2019s kid,\u2019\u201d I said. \u201cYou wanted respect with my name off your back. I promised I wouldn\u2019t interfere.\u201d<\/p>\n
I gripped the steering wheel a little too hard.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I kept that promise\u2026 right up until I saw you on that bench with my grandson and three suitcases.\u201d<\/p>\n
The city thinned out, bridges and trees replacing concrete. Up ahead, the gates to my place came into view.<\/p>\n
He stared at me in the rearview mirror. \u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n
For the first time all day, I felt my old self slide back into place. The one people in New York quietly crossed the street to avoid doing business against.<\/p>\n
