Pine Hollow Road is a narrow two-lane stretch that always makes me nervous in bad weather. That afternoon the sky was perfectly clear\u2014bright blue, calm, peaceful.<\/div>\n
But my stomach felt like it was folding in on itself.<\/div>\n
When I turned onto the dirt road leading to my property, I felt it immediately.<\/div>\n
Something was wrong.<\/div>\n
Land feels different when something familiar disappears.<\/div>\n
Like when someone removes a picture from the wall and the paint behind it is still brighter than the rest.<\/div>\n
The six sycamore trees along the eastern side of my land were gone.<\/div>\n
Not broken by wind.<\/div>\n
Not trimmed.<\/div>\n
Gone.<\/div>\n
Those trees had been there for decades. Thick trunks. High branches. They leaned just slightly toward the sunlight like they\u2019d been listening to the world for forty years.<\/div>\n
My dad planted three of them when I was a kid.<\/div>\n
The other three came later.<\/div>\n
Together they formed a green wall that shielded my yard from the ridge above.<\/div>\n
Now there were six stumps sitting in the dirt.<\/div>\n
Fresh cuts. Flat and clean. The work of professionals.<\/div>\n
The branches had already been hauled away. Even most of the sawdust was gone, like someone had tried to clean up before leaving.<\/div>\n
Mara stood near the fence with her arms crossed tightly.<\/div>\n
She didn\u2019t say I\u2019m sorry.<\/div>\n
She didn\u2019t say this is awful.<\/div>\n
She simply shook her head.<\/div>\n
\u201cI tried to stop them.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cWhat do you mean you tried?\u201d I asked.<\/div>\n
She explained that two trucks pulled up late that morning. Company logos on the doors. Workers in hard hats and bright orange shirts.<\/div>\n
She walked over and asked what they were doing.<\/div>\n
One of the guys told her they were following a work order.<\/div>\n
\u201cWhose work order?\u201d she asked.<\/div>\n
\u201cCedar Ridge Estates HOA.\u201d<\/div>\n
I blinked.<\/div>\n
Cedar Ridge Estates sits on the ridge above my property. A gated development that showed up about five years ago.<\/div>\n
Stone entrance sign.<\/div>\n
Decorative fountain that runs even during water restrictions.<\/div>\n
Huge houses with even bigger opinions.<\/div>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re not part of Cedar Ridge,\u201d I said.<\/div>\n
\u201cExactly,\u201d Mara replied.<\/div>\n
There was a business card tucked under my windshield wiper.<\/div>\n
Summit Tree & Land Management.<\/div>\n
I called the number.<\/div>\n
A man answered after two rings.<\/div>\n
\u201cSummit Tree, this is Brad.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cBrad,\u201d I said calmly, \u201cwhy did your crew cut down six sycamores on my property this morning?\u201d<\/div>\n
There was a pause.<\/div>\n
Paper rustling.<\/div>\n
\u201cWell sir, we received a work order from Cedar Ridge Estates HOA for boundary clearing along the south overlook.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cThat overlook isn\u2019t their land,\u201d I said. \u201cIt\u2019s mine.\u201d<\/div>\n
Another pause.<\/div>\n
Longer this time.<\/div>\n
\u201cSir\u2026 the HOA president authorized it. They told us the trees were encroaching on common property and blocking the community\u2019s view corridor.\u201d<\/div>\n
View corridor.<\/div>\n
I almost laughed out loud.<\/div>\n
Like my forty-year-old trees were just paperwork standing in the way of someone\u2019s scenery.<\/div>\n
\u201cWell Brad,\u201d I said slowly, \u201cthose trees were planted long before Cedar Ridge existed. And that land has never belonged to your HOA.\u201d<\/div>\n
Silence filled the line.<\/div>\n
Then he said something that made my jaw tighten.<\/div>\n
\u201cIf there\u2019s a dispute, sir, you\u2019ll need to take it up with the HOA.\u201d<\/div>\n
I looked out across the six stumps again.<\/div>\n
My father\u2019s trees.<\/div>\n
The shade they used to cast across the yard.<\/div>\n
The privacy they\u2019d given my house for most of my life.<\/div>\n
And suddenly something became very clear.<\/div>\n
The people living up on that ridge had decided my property was nothing more than an obstacle to their view.<\/div>\n
What they didn\u2019t realize yet\u2026<\/div>\n
Was that the only road leading into Cedar Ridge Estates crosses the lower corner of my land.<\/div>\n
