Hannah didn\u2019t fight. She couldn\u2019t. The stranger dragged her through the broken window, pulling her past jagged glass that ripped her jacket and sliced her skin. Her lungs screamed. Her ribs felt like they had shattered.<\/div>\n
Then the world tore open above her.<\/div>\n
Air.<\/div>\n
Rain.<\/div>\n
Hands under her arms.<\/div>\n
A man\u2019s voice, deep and rough, cut through the storm.<\/div>\n

She coughed river water into the mud while he hauled her onto the bank. She saw only pieces of him through the rain: dark hair plastered to his forehead, blood running down his temple, a tailored coat soaked and ruined, hands torn open from glass.<\/div>\n
\u201cWho are you?\u201d she rasped.<\/div>\n
He looked toward the road where sirens wailed in the distance.<\/div>\n
\u201cSomeone who got there in time.\u201d<\/div>\n
Then he draped his coat over her trembling body and disappeared into the trees before the ambulance arrived.<\/div>\n
At the hospital, a nurse with silver hair and kind eyes told Hannah she had bruised ribs, mild hypothermia, and enough cuts to keep the ER staff busy for hours.<\/div>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re lucky, sweetheart,\u201d the nurse said. \u201cWhoever pulled you out saved your life.\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cHe was here?\u201d<\/div>\n
\u201cFor a minute. Refused treatment. Left before police could get his name.\u201d The nurse nodded toward the chair beside the bed. \u201cLeft that expensive coat, though.\u201d<\/div>\n
Hannah turned her head.<\/div>\n
The coat hung over the chair, heavy black wool, still damp. Inside the collar, stitched in gold thread, were two initials.<\/div>\n
C.R.<\/div>\n
The police came later.<\/div>\n
Two detectives. One older, one young enough to still believe paperwork could fix evil.<\/div>\n
They asked about the rain. Her speed. Whether she had been drinking. Whether she had enemies.<\/div>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Hannah said. \u201cI\u2019m a photographer. I shoot weddings, magazine features, charity events. I don\u2019t have enemies.\u201d<\/div>\n
The older detective exchanged a look with his partner.<\/div>\n
