I washed the sheets seven times, and still my husband’s strange smell wouldn’t go away…

I sat there on the floor, my heart pounding in my chest like a drum. The reality of my discovery felt like a heavy weight pressing down on my shoulders. The ID, the clothes… everything pointed to a secret life Alejandro was living. How could he do this to me? Our eight-year marriage felt like a cruel joke, a lie built on hidden truths.

I tried to gather my thoughts, but my mind was a whirlwind of emotions. Anger, betrayal, fear—they all mixed together, making it hard to breathe. I knew I had to stay calm, had to think clearly. Alejandro would return in three days, and I needed a plan.

I spent the next few hours cleaning up the mess. With rubber gloves on, I carefully wrapped the packages back up and stuffed them into a bag, which I hid in the back of our closet, behind old boxes of shoes. I cleaned the mattress as best as I could and placed it back on the bed frame. The smell still lingered in the room, but I lit every candle I had, hoping to mask it.

That night, I barely slept. Every creak of the house made me jump, every shadow felt like it was moving. I kept replaying everything in my mind. Who was this other woman? Was she still alive? The ID said “WIFE,” but what did that mean for me? Was I the other woman in his life, or was she?

The next morning, I called my best friend, Ana. She was the only person I could trust with something like this. Her voice was a soothing balm as she listened without interrupting.

“Lucía, you need to be careful,” Ana warned. “We don’t know what Alejandro is capable of. This is serious.”

“I know,” I whispered, “but what do I do? I can’t stay here, not like this.”

“I’ll help you,” Ana promised. “You can stay at my place until we figure this out.”

With Ana’s help, I packed a small bag with essentials. I took only what I needed, leaving behind the life I thought I had. The thought of confronting Alejandro terrified me, but I knew I couldn’t face him alone.

I spent the next day at Ana’s, trying to piece together the puzzle of my life. We searched online for any information about the woman in the ID. Hours of digging led us to a news article from three years ago. A young woman had gone missing under mysterious circumstances. The photo in the article matched the one on the ID.

A chill ran down my spine. What had Alejandro done? And was I next if he found out I knew his secret?

The weekend passed in a blur of anxiety and fear. I didn’t dare return home, too afraid of what I might discover or what might happen. Ana and I made a plan to go to the police, but I hesitated. What if they didn’t believe me? What if Alejandro had connections that could protect him?
