Claire held her phone tightly, her heart pounding with a mix of anger and determination. She knew she had to act swiftly. Standing there in the aisle, she could feel the eyes of curious passengers on her, but she remained focused on the task at hand. Her fingers tapped quickly on her screen as she made the call she knew would change everything.
“Hello?” came the voice on the other end, calm and professional, yet familiar.
“Hi, Emma. It’s Claire,” she said, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. “I need you to connect me to HR and legal as soon as possible. It’s urgent.”
Emma, Claire’s trusted assistant at the construction company, didn’t question her. “Of course, Claire. I’ll patch you through right away.”
As Claire waited, she could see Ryan’s face, a mask of shock and disbelief. Chloe looked away, as if wishing she could disappear. The other passengers in first class were doing their best to pretend they weren’t listening, but everyone knew something explosive was happening.
In moments, Claire was connected to the HR director, Lisa, and the company’s legal advisor, Mark. She explained the situation in clear, concise terms, her voice leaving no room for doubt or misunderstanding.
“I want an immediate freeze on all joint accounts and assets linked to Ryan and me,” Claire instructed. “Also, start preparing the necessary documentation for a divorce. I’ll send over more details once I’m back in the office.”
Lisa’s voice was calm and reassuring. “We’re on it, Claire. We’ll handle everything from this end. Just take care of yourself.”
Claire ended the call, feeling a strange sense of relief wash over her. She had taken the first step toward reclaiming her life, and there was no turning back now. She looked directly at Ryan, whose expression had shifted from shock to a kind of desperate pleading.
“Claire, please, I can explain—” he started, but Claire held up a hand to stop him.
“Don’t,” she said softly, almost kindly. “There’s nothing you can say that will change what you’ve done.”
Ryan’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, but no more words came out. Claire turned her attention to Chloe, who was sitting rigidly in her seat, staring down at her hands.
“Chloe,” Claire said, her voice gentle but firm. “I hope you think this was worth it.”
Chloe met her gaze for a brief moment before looking away again, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. Claire felt a fleeting sense of pity for the young woman but quickly brushed it aside. She had to stay strong, for her own sake.
