A 19-year-old from Mineiros, in the Brazilian state of Goiás, was in for a surprise she never even imagined possible when she decided to carry out a paternity test on her twins.
The result revealed that each of the babies had a different biological father.
.The doubt arose several months after the birth, when the children were around eight months old. The mother decided to have a test done with the man she believed was the father.
The result was baffling: the man was indeed the father of one of the babies, but had no biological connection to the other.
The young woman then remembered that she had had sexual relations with another man during the same period and decided to find him to carry out a second test.
The DNA confirmed the situation: he was the second baby’s biological father.

Although it seems impossible, there is a scientific explanation. The phenomenon is known as heteropaternal superfecundation and can occur when a woman releases two eggs during the same cycle and they are fertilized by sperm from different men after having sexual relations within a close time frame.
In this case, the babies are fraternal twins and share the same mother, but have different biological fathers.
It is an extremely rare phenomenon in humans and can normally only be discovered through a genetic test.
One pregnancy, two babies, and a DNA result that completely changed the family’s story: each had a different father.
