As Derek’s face turned from anger to apprehension, I felt a flicker of hope amidst the turmoil. My brother Mason had always been my protector, and even though he lived a good 30 minutes away, I knew he would drop everything to get to me. My heart pounded in my chest as I stayed on the line, listening to his determined breathing on the other end.
Around me, the party guests stood frozen, unsure of what to do. Some shifted uncomfortably, avoiding eye contact, while others whispered to each other in disbelief. Karen, bless her heart, stayed between Derek and me, her stance protective. I could see the conflict on her face, torn between her role as my boss and her natural instinct to help.
Derek’s family, however, remained unmoved. Gloria crossed her arms, her expression one of smug righteousness. Felicia glanced at her phone, clearly bored with the whole scene, as if my suffering was just another family drama she had seen too many times before.
“Mason’s on his way,” I said quietly, more to myself than anyone else, but Derek heard me. His eyes flickered with uncertainty. For a moment, I thought he might apologize or back down, but instead, he just glared at me, frustrated and cornered.
The minutes dragged on, each one feeling like a small eternity. I tried to steady my breathing, focusing on the sound of Mason’s voice as he talked me through his drive, reassuring me with each mile marker he passed. My cheek throbbed painfully, a constant reminder of Derek’s betrayal and the twisted support of his family.
Finally, headlights swept across the backyard, and I heard the screech of tires as Mason’s car came to a halt. Relief washed over me like a wave, and I nearly collapsed with the weight of it. Mason burst through the back gate, his presence like a force of nature. He was tall and broad, with a no-nonsense demeanor that had always made me feel safe.
“Mason!” I cried, the single word filled with all the emotions I couldn’t voice.
He took in the scene with one sweeping glance, his eyes cold as they landed on Derek. Without hesitation, Mason stepped forward, his posture protective and unyielding. “Vanessa, come here,” he said, his voice calm but commanding.
