A Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Israel was forced to divert to Saudi Arabia after an alleged altercation between the pilots triggered emergency signals and sent the aircraft plunging thousands of feet. The Boeing 737 Max 8, carrying around 150 passengers, reportedly descended from about 34,000 feet to 14,000 feet in roughly two minutes.
The incident became even more alarming after reports emerged that one of the pilots had allegedly been stabbed. Other reports said both the captain and first officer were injured. An Israeli official told Reuters that the pilots had become involved in a “physical altercation,” while Flydubai confirmed that the aircraft transmitted emergency signals, including one associated with a hijacking.
The plane eventually landed safely at Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia. All passengers were reportedly safe and accounted for, while both cockpit crew members were taken to hospital for treatment. Passengers remained in Saudi Arabia as officials worked with Flydubai to arrange a replacement aircraft and continue their journey.
The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear. Some Israeli officials reportedly considered the possibility of an attempted terror attack, while other explanations were also being examined. Flydubai said it was cooperating with authorities and would provide further updates as confirmed information became available.
