How Is the Man Who Was Frozen in 1967 Doing Today And Could He Really Be Revived in 2027?

More than half a century ago, a California man became part of one of the most extraordinary experiments in human history. James Hiram Bedford, a psychology professor who died in 1967, became the first widely documented person to undergo cryonic preservation. After his death, his body was cooled and eventually placed in liquid nitrogen, where it has remained preserved ever since. The hope was simple but extraordinary: that one day, future medical technology might be advanced enough to repair the damage caused by death and bring him back to life.

Today, Bedford remains cryopreserved at the Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Arizona. His preservation has become one of the most famous cases in the history of cryonics, and his story continues to attract attention as scientists investigate technologies involving organ preservation, cellular repair and regenerative medicine. According to accounts of his preservation, later inspections found no obvious deterioration visible at the time, although that does not mean his body has been proven capable of being revived. Cryonics remains an experimental practice, and no cryonically preserved human has ever been successfully revived.

That makes the idea of a 2027 revival especially fascinating—but also highly speculative. There is currently no established medical technology capable of restoring a cryopreserved human being to life, and there is no confirmed plan to revive Bedford in 2027. Cryonics organizations essentially preserve patients in the hope that future scientists will someday develop techniques capable of repairing the biological damage involved. Even researchers interested in life-extension acknowledge that major scientific obstacles remain.

So, what is Bedford like today? He is not alive in the conventional sense, nor is he conscious or waiting awake for the year 2027. His body remains in cryogenic storage, preserved at extremely low temperatures. Whether future generations will ever possess the technology needed to reverse the process remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding cryonics. For now, James Bedford’s story is less about a man who has already returned from the dead—and more about humanity’s extraordinary attempt to leave the door open for a future that does not yet exist.
