These images show the dramatic rescues taking place in Nepal, where hundreds of people were trapped or isolated after a flash flood occurred this Wednesday, August 26. The emergency began after part of a glacier in the Himalayas collapsed, triggering a massive avalanche of water, ice, rocks and mud that swept away roads, bridges and villages.

The tragedy also affected Tibet, and as of this Thursday, reports speak of hundreds of fatalities and more than 1,300 people missing across both territories. Thousands of rescuers are working to reach the affected areas and find survivors.
Nepal is located in the Himalayas, between India and China, and its mountainous terrain makes rescue efforts even more difficult. These images show some of the most striking moments of the emergency.
