“They want to cancel me for saying that children deserve cartoons without LGBT content”: the controversial statement attributed to Scarlett Johansson

No one knows who wrote it first, but everyone repeated it as if Scarlett Johansson had said it in front of a microphone.

The statement claims that the actress defended the idea that “children should have  cartoons without LGBT content” and that this is why they want to cancel her. It spread across social media until it became a subject of debate between those calling for content suited to minors’ age and those demanding more diversity on  children’s screens.

What is striking is that no verified media outlet has recorded Johansson saying those words. What is real, however, is her history of representation controversies: in 2018, she left the film Rub & Tug after criticism for portraying a trans man, and later spoke publicly about actors’ freedom to take on any role. This time, the statement attributed to her does not even have a confirmed source behind it.
