So when I turned onto the street and saw three unfamiliar SUVs, loud music, and wet towels hanging over my wicker chairs, I first felt confusion… and then a cold anger.
The front door was open. There were children running on the terrace, kicking a ball near my plants. Inside, the television was on. Voices filled my kitchen. The smell of food. Noise. Disorder.
Then Tiffany appeared, wearing my embroidered apron, the one I had sewn myself with my initials.
“Oh, mother-in-law,” she said with that sweet smile that always hid something. “I thought you weren’t coming until February. Peter said we could use the house this week, so I brought my family. You know, a little vacation.”
Behind her, I saw her sister lying on my couch, her mother opening my cabinets as if looking for something that belonged to her, and two teenagers running up and down the stairs barefoot. There was even a baby sleeping on the couch by the window where I used to read in the afternoons.
“I told Peter I’d be here today,” I replied, trying to stay calm.
Tiffany shrugged.
“He probably forgot. He’s swamped at work. But we’re already settled in… and honestly, there’s no room for extra guests.”
Extra guests.
In my own house.
Everyone stopped what they were doing to look at me. No one spoke. No one moved. It was as if they were waiting for me to shout, cry, or make a scene. But I didn’t give them that satisfaction.
I looked at my keys. I looked at my damaged plants. I looked at Tiffany, so comfortable, so confident, so convinced she had won something.
“That’s fine,” I said with a soft smile. “I’ll find somewhere else to stay.”
Her eyes lit up. Relief. Triumph.
I went to a small hotel a few kilometers away, one with a side view of the sea and a balcony from which I could barely see the roof of my house. That night, I didn’t sleep. Not because I was sad. Because I was clear-headed.
Because I understood that this was no longer just a family slight. It was an invasion. A humiliation. A message.
And the next morning, when I returned to enter with my own key, I discovered that what Tiffany had done was far worse than I had imagined…
